The biggest mistake aspiring writers make is showing their work before
it's ready.
We've all heard about writers who've sold their first draft for a million
dollars and thought: "that can happen to me, too."
Everybody thinks it - even professional writers. But professional writers
are cautious. They do not take the chance of giving their work to their
agent, manager, producer or executive without having it gone over by a colleague.
They do this after every single draft. Why? - Because we know
.
YOU ONLY GET ONE CHANCE TO MAKE A GREAT IMPRESSION.
And we also know
.
THE EIGHT ABSOLUTE TRUTHS OF SCREENWRITING
1. Writing is rewriting.
2. Writing is rewriting.
3. Writing is rewriting.
4. Writing is rewriting.
5. Writing is rewriting.
6. Writing is rewriting.
7. Writing is rewriting.
8. Writing is rewriting.
It takes discipline. People think the only discipline involved is sitting
down to write. No, that's easy. The hard part is disciplining yourself to
not show your work until you know, without a doubt, that it's great.
It is essential you work on your script to the point where you and many
other people agree it is great before you submit to contests, agents, managers
and producers.
You must maximize your chances by making your work the best it can be.
I hear this all the time. "It's good enough. If they like the idea,
they'll buy it and pay me to re-write it."
That is the farthest thing from the truth. It's not the way things really
work. I'm not saying it doesn't happen. It just doesn't happen as often
as you think. Generally, producers have to love a script to buy it.
And unfortunately, the distance between a good idea and a great script
is vast. I read scripts with good ideas all the time. I read great scripts
rarely.
The tricky part is knowing when your good idea reaches the point of being
a great movie. That's where we can help.
WHO ARE WE?
We are 7 professional writers who have written over 50 produced TV shows
and Feature Films. Six of these movies were in the top ten of the box office.
We have written work that has attracted such diverse talent as John Travolta,
Denzel Washington, Chris Rock, Chris Farley, Nick Cage, Richard Gere, Sean
Penn, Kristen Scott Thomas, Alicia Silverstone etc
.
We have sold scripts to
Fox, Disney, Warner Brothers, New Line, Miramax,
Universal, MGM/UA, Paramount, USA Films, NBC, ABC, WB, FOX TV, TNT, TBS,
Disney Channel, Showtime, and A & E.
Because we're writers, we approach screenplays differently than producers
or executives. We don't try to turn your script into the latest hit. We
work with you on your vision and help guide it toward the marketplace.
We understand what it is to be a writer. We have all been where you are
now.
We don't write studio coverage. We work on your script in a dynamic and
constructive way.
SCRIPT COACHING: The Brainstorming Process:
Brainstorming emulates the real development process in Hollywood.
Although some producers and studio execs give writers written notes, it
is the brainstorming process in meetings that solves problems and enhances
creativity.
Script Notes and Coverage Notes focus on problems.
Brainstorming focuses on solutions.
CAREER MENTORING
Becoming a screenwriter is a difficult task. There are highs and lows -
a LOT of lows. Our professional writers have been through it all. They've
struggled to break in. They've had hot and cold periods. They've dealt with
agents, managers, executives, publicists, directors, actors, producers -
all of it.
They're working writers who are out pitching, selling, getting notes from
producers and studios, and rewriting every day. They have reservoirs of
information and a network for you to tap into.
It's hard work - and even harder to do it alone.
MARKETING STRATEGIES:
The old axiom is somewhat true: "It's not what you know, it's who
you know."
Getting a great recommendation to a manager and agent is extraordinarily
important. Getting your script read by the agent, manager or producer himself
and not by their readers is crucial.
Our writers have worked with all the top agencies, many of the top managers
and have written scripts for, Fox, Disney, Warner Brothers, New Line, Miramax,
Universal, MGM/UA, Paramount, USA Films, NBC, ABC, WB, FOX TV, TNT, TBS,
Disney Channel, Showtime, and A & E. We know the people you want to
know. We could be your first real connection in the business.
